Ireneusz Socha had prepared this year’s Memorial Day for Jews of Dębica that took place on July 21, 2020.
The Memorial Day for Jews of Dębica is organized by Ireneusz Socha each year to mark the first liquidation action in the local ghetto that took place on July 21, 1942.
Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic threat, this year’s agenda included only two items.
The event began in the former ghetto area, at the corner of Kościuszki and Głowackiego Streets in what is today a playpark, at 17:00 CET. Ireneusz Socha delivered a special speech in commemoration of 12,000 Polish Jews, including more than 2,000 Jews of Dębica, who were imprisoned in the local ghetto, made forced laborers and were finally exterminated by German and Austrian Nazis and their helpers in the city or at the death camps in Bełżec and Auschwitz.
Then participants went to the Wolica Forest to honor the memory of about 500 Jewish victims who were murdered there in a mass execution in July 1942.
May their memory be a blessing! May their souls be bound up in the bond of eternal life!
